What to Expect During an Emergency Dental Visit

During your appointment, the emergency dentists at AZ Family Dental will examine your teeth and mouth. They will check for any signs of disease or infection and ask you about your symptoms. Then, they will get you ready for the required procedure. The length of your visit will depend on the cause of your problem and the treatments needed to resolve it. If you have a nerve-related emergency, one of our dentists will use a numbing agent to keep you comfortable. You may also need a follow-up appointment.

After your emergency visit, our dentists will give you instructions that show you how to care for your mouth and teeth. Following these steps and practicing good oral hygiene will help you reduce the risk of future emergencies.

Should I Go to the ER or the Dentist?

Like other urgent health issues, dental emergencies can require varying levels of care. Symptoms that need immediate attention or threaten your life may need a visit to the emergency room. Examples of problems suited for the ER include fractures, dislocations, severe infections, and lacerations. Some issues still need immediate care, but they don’t threaten your life. For example, a broken or lost tooth should get treatment from one of our dentists as soon as possible, but it causes no immediate harm.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you have a dental emergency, call our office right away. We can take new patients during our regular business hours and returning patients at any day and time. Our offices are located in the greater Phoenix area. Between the time of your emergency and your appointment, you can take a few measures to promote recovery:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to cleanse the affected area and wash away germs.
  • If you have a lost or broken tooth, keep the fragment or tooth moist with a glass of milk. You may try to reinsert your tooth if you lose the entire tooth. Keep a reinserted tooth in place by biting down on a gauze pad.
  • Try to tell our dentist as many details as possible about the cause of your dental emergency. You can write them down if you think it would help you remember.

When you call our office, you can ask about additional ways to improve your chance of recovery. Taking the right precautions will help the emergency dentist get your mouth back to its former state.

Frequently Asked Questions for Emergency Dental Services

What is a dental emergency and how do you deal with one?

A dental emergency is any situation in which you experience severe jaw, teeth, or facial pain that isn’t being treated with over-the-counter medication.

A traumatic dental emergency that requires immediate attention includes any of the following:

– Tooth fractures
– Luxations (joint dislocation)
– Avulsions (serious skin trauma)
– Moderate to severe toothache
– Lost filling or crown
– Broken braces
– An abscess (mouth infection)
– Persistent mouth bleeding and pain following a tooth extraction

In the case of a dental emergency, contact us immediately and report the problem. Untreated trauma can lead to infection and other serious dental complications. Our dentists will advise you of what steps to take, whether that be coming into their office or the nearest hospital, depending on the severity of the situation.
